This is the main reason why most people of color don't vote Republican. Let's unpack this argument. Somehow the appointment of one Hispanic guy to one position in the whole government is supposed to make up for greater opportunity for more people to go to college. I am not an expert on Hispanic culture, but I'd bet money that more Hispanics would want to say "My baby's a doctor" than "There's a Hispanic attorney general". People want your being in office to benefit them, and often they won't accept rich whites as a proxy for them. The job of a politician is to find what policies benefit your voters and enact them. Promising symbolism works for some voters but not for others.
