The competition that drives parents to hothouse their children is still present in adulthood. I think it's because at least in America, everything reflects on your moral character. Don't have a high paying job? You must be lazy. Park over the line? You're a rude SOB. Got cancer? You don't think enough happy thoughts. I'm not sure how you could ever be a decent person in America, and sadly, I can't start drinking.
